Understanding Al Gore
Have you ever found yourself saying “What the heck is wrong with Al Gore?” I think I have the
answer. I know I’m not a trained psychiatrist, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. All
kidding aside, I have always been interested in behavioral sciences, something that has served
me well at times. Hey, if Abe Lincoln can be “self taught” why not me, I even have the internet
(thanks to Al) to aid in my research.
Sometimes, when people reach tremendous wealth and success with relative ease, they
develop a type of guilt about leaving the people they have known for years behind. The best
example I know of is MC Hammer. If you’re too young to know this guy, you should “Google” him.
Hammer achieved success rather quickly and most feel he felt guilty about his success as he
saw his old friends remain poor. He became known in the industry for spending lavishly and
giving jobs to his old buddies that only required them to travel and hang with him, and he had a
lot of friends. By April 3, 1996 this lifestyle made him 13 million dollars in debt and forced to file
bankruptcy.
I think Al Gore and others like him have taken this condition to a whole new level. Like an
individual, our country has achieved tremendous wealth and success in just 232 years.
Compared to countries and civilizations that have been around for thousands of years, we have
been a rocket of success.
Some people in our country that have traveled the world start to feel guilty about being born into
such a successful society. It’s hard for them to understand why they have been so fortunate and
they feel it necessary to inflict pain upon themselves, and our country, to some how even the
disparities. My guess is that someone with a formal education in this field would even have a
name for this type of mental illness.
This is where, and I’m very serious when I say this, I would like to have trained professionals
examine this thought process and define it with behavior patterns and give it a formal name so
that the rest of us can recognize these symptoms and learn how not to be enablers of this
illness.
