We Need The Line Item Veto
The line item veto is something Ronald Reagan asked for while campaigning for
President. It’s a simple concept: rather than having the President veto an entire bill, he
can veto just a line or an item in the bill. The House and the Senate could still override
the veto’s but at least you wouldn’t have to start all over.
Makes sense doesn’t it? Then why don’t we have it? Because that’s how politicians
turn issues into game play. Remember the “SCHIPS” bill where the President was
accused of “leaving the children behind”? Oh yeah, the 24 year old children. All that
time was wasted putting together a bills that they knew would not pass just so they
could play games with the President.
Well, enough is enough. Some will say they are in favor of the line item veto, but they
too are playing games by putting it in a bill they know will not pass. Shame on you! I will
present a bill, maybe we will call it the “Put up or shut up” bill that will be the line item
veto only. No “earmarks” or anything not directly connected to the “Line Item Veto.”
